Orphan presents the first English-subtitled version of the 1990 movie Hashire! Shiroi Ookami (Run! White Wolf). Encoded from a somewhat worn Japanese VHS tape; the tape is in “wide-screen” (letterboxed) format. The English dub (usually called White Fang) mangles the story a bit to make it seem like the anime is based on Jack London’s novel; it’s not. See this blog entry for details.

The movie tells the story of a boy, Russ Clagg, taking his increasingly wild wolf, Gray, on a 300km trek to the last remaining wolf habitat in Wisconsin. The movie is very visual, with little dialog; most of it seems to be the young protagonist calling out “Gray!” to get the wolf’s attention.

The wolf doesn’t seem very interested, to be honest.
