Orphan is chuffed to preset the first English-subtitled version of the 1990 movie *Tistou Midori no Oyayubi* (*Tistou of the Green Thumbs*). Based on a classic French children's novel by Maurice Druon, it tells the story of a young boy, Tistou, who is not very good at book learning. His father sets him to work with the family gardener. ![screencap](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPK-QFp4Np9xoDNU9b52_eYThZRNf47B47o7xRVzLrDJCvbb_uEmOTvoIGwDziu-Uy48SVYt_PkxSyiS5T-3H5sMxSI_XV7DZwHaAo19-Ned0wcE0oU9fWAClGDj8JQo5CKVYAbk4V_OM3Z9yRgUadyK9B-0hdZHECc8hkFFyLsplRPaNyU3GLk7o1A-j-/s744/%5BWOWmd-raw%5D%20Tistou%20Midori%20no%20Oyayubi%20(LD)%20-%20Part%201_001_21287.png) There, Tistou discovers that he has "green thumbs," which cause flowers to sprout any place he touches: ![screencap](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoYUpKRkZp-ISXLmS91ED8uax1AdTEdmlCO9XAF8pE1vCd6SWCIPd_ZTMBJQHTMv1XvEhz-hC_7Gp3GiouCzJXKqkbqJWL89Jn8_uBQWaKXeUyGctR4GZGA1mlPjbwa5xr8daVcFS_49MiYdtj19omyJxNktHJHL4Z1x51CfgpgQ6UqSZu-N0xFXOCErP4/s748/%5BWOWmd-raw%5D%20Tistou%20Midori%20no%20Oyayubi%20(LD)%20-%20Part%202_001_3147.png) With this miraculous talent, Tistou transform his world for the better. But it's too good to last, of course. The movie is utterly beautiful, with watercolor-like backdrops and pastel coloring. ![screencap](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoHH5cXbJp6MmkuLHwiE9YsXWWXEUCfaCtCu4JrAypj4D6O9NnRD39MwblP5Cvg_dr0bcsr02c7K7m6HBKafGa445Xwc1QGLhU-kDTrBX0qtfakrkm7a1UcFDF197iM24usDb2SVv7TjPjSbDw4kRLdMtcN7FONzeq0u-cP3XIMUgaCaJDG3rxmhCRcmLq/s744/%5BWOWmd-raw%5D%20Tistou%20Midori%20no%20Oyayubi%20(LD)%20-%20Part%201_001_3171.png) Preserving all this detail took a lot of bits, and the encode, from a Domesday Duplicator rip of a Japanese laserdisc, is quite large. It's also divided into two parts, because the first and second sides of the laserdisc had slightly different framing. See [this blog entry](https://collectr.blogspot.com/2025/03/tistou-midori-no-oyayubi.html) for more details. *Tistou Midori no Oyayubi* is a wonderful film, airy and charming; the translator called it "kino" (look it up in the Urban Dictionary). This release, and all Orphan releases, are available for direct download from IRC bot Orphan|Arutha in channels #nibl or #news on irc.rizon.net.
